Nest #2

I think the rivalry is sort of at a standstill because they both have their opinions and the arguement isn't really moving anywhere.

As of now I think Chief is very strong, because he has survived in the ward for so long. McMurphy allows him to have another sense of hope in defeating Big Nurse. It makes him more optomistic in general because he sees a glimpse of salvation.

At this point in the story, I am rooting for McMurphy becasue I admire his determined-ness and how strong of a leader he is. I wish that he could be more effective.

Gatsby Blog #3

1. Why does Gatsby have to die?
The reason Gatbsy has to die is that it ends the story so there is no room for interpretation. The fact is he didn't achieve his dream and he never will. If he ended up living we could have hope they get togethere and from there make our own speculations.

2. Why does Fitzgerald have the book end with Gatsby's death?
He feels that love hasn't been good for him and he wants other people to feel that pain. He wants to share that not every dream is attainable.

3. Why does Nick tell this after its happened?
It shows a respect for Gatsby. You know that he thought of Gatbsy in a postitive manner and it allows him to put in emotion where he sees fit after all is said and done.

4. Why is Daisy stil with Tom?
She has a sense of security when she is around him and it allows her to have someone who loves her. If she wanted to switch to Gatsby there would be the crossing of the unknown and the idea of the possibilities scare her.

Gatsby Blog #2

Fitzgerald does a fantastic job of revealing details to us a little at a time, allowing us to pass and change judgment as the story progresses. Address the following questions in relation to the development of Jay Gatsby: 1) What is the purpose of Meyer Wolfsheim as a character? How does he affect the way we see Gatsby? 2) What does the backstory about Jay and Daisy's past do to our impressions of Gatsby? 3) What does the story of the rest of Gatsby past due to our impressions of him? 4) How does your overall impression of Gatsby change over these three chapters - do you like him more, less, and why?

1. I think he gives a history of Gatsby developing how we view his current take on life through his past. This allows to have more insight into how Gatsby has developed over time.

2. It makes us show more sympathy for Gatsby and allows us to see a more sensitive side of him.

3. The other stories make him seem more shady and mysterious so you start to question his outlook on life. Also, you get to introduce how the past still hangs with him.

4. I like him less because he becomes more mysterious and I like things to be very blunt and straight. It makes me question all of him decisions.

Looking at first three chapters of The Great Gatsby, make some predictions about these characters and (unlike Nick) classify them into one of the three categories - hero, antihero, and villain. Give ample reasons for your classification, with support for the text (that means quotes...and page numbers)

Gatsby is an antihero because we want him to win but he throws insane parties and is almost stalker-ish to Daisy. "Anyhow, he [Gatsby] gives large parties...and I like large parties. They're so intimate. At small parties there isn't any privacy." (Chapter III)

Nick wouldn't be any of these because he is just a narrarator and we dont really care what he does other than tell the story.

Fallacies in Famous Speeches

"Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate."

This is a turn of phrase. It gives the audience a sense of empowerment like they have voice. It gives them motivation. The essay uses so many fallacies because it is what makes you want to be on JFK's side of arguements and possibly thinking ahead to the next election.

"Duck and Cover"

The over message of the video is that you should know how to protect yourself from atomic bombs. We know this because it spends the whole video on instructing you how to do so. The covert message is that policeman and other city volunteers are how socities function. It always shows these people as helpful in a time of need in the video, giving them some ethos. In the video they use plain folk, because they show atleast one situation that relates to you.

"Destination Earth"

The overt message in this video is that Americans are the most advanced society in the universe, and everyone else should be jealous. We know this because the whole thing is talking about how we have petroleum and cars and that makes us more advanced. The covert message is that you should by a car. They don't directly state this, but it talks about how amazing they are and how they can help you become more productive. It uses glittering generalities because everyone is happy and there are no red lights or anything.
